Thus saith the LORD, In this thou shalt know that I am the LORD: behold, I will smite with the rod that is in mine hand upon the waters which are in the river, and they shall be turned to blood. — Exodus 7:17
Here God explains the purpose of the miracle-that Pharaoh would know that He is the Lord.
This reminds me that God’s works are meant to reveal who He is. Just like David said in 1 Samuel 17:46, that all the earth may know there is a God, here God is making Himself known in Egypt.
Jeremiah 9:23-24 teaches that true glory is not in wisdom, might, or riches, but in knowing God. And John 17:3 says that eternal life is to know the only true God.
God’s heart is to be known. That begins in salvation, but it doesn’t stop there. Philippians 3:10 reminds me that knowing Him is not just knowledge-it is experience. It is walking with Him daily.
The Nile turning to blood shows me something important. The very thing Egypt trusted for life became a source of death. God has a way of showing people that what they trust in, apart from Him, cannot sustain them.
Psalm 20:7 says some trust in chariots and horses, but we will remember or trust the name (the character) of the Lord. Pharaoh trusted the Nile-and God touched it.
