Exodus 4:6 | Pastor Burns' Study Notes

And the LORD said furthermore unto him, Put now thine hand into thy bosom. And he put his hand into his bosom: and when he took it out, behold, his hand was leprous as snow. — Exodus 4:6

God gives Moses a second sign. Moses places his hand into his bosom, and when he removes it, it is leprous as snow.

This sign demonstrates God’s power over disease, but it also carries symbolic force. In Scripture, the bosom is often connected with the inner life, the heart, identity, and affection. Leprosy, in turn, functions as a fitting picture of corruption, uncleanness, and separation.

The sign therefore reveals more than external power. It exposes inward condition. Moses has been doubting, hesitating, fearing, and focusing on himself. In that sense, the problem in the mission is not merely Pharaoh, but also Moses’ own weakness.

This fits the broader biblical diagnosis of the human heart in Jeremiah 17:9. The real disease is inward before it is outward.
