Exodus 4:5 | Pastor Burns' Study Notes

That they may believe that the LORD God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath appeared unto thee. — Exodus 4:5

God explains the purpose of the sign. It is given so that Israel may believe that the Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, has appeared to Moses.

The sign is therefore not about Moses proving himself. It is about God revealing Himself. The miracle points away from the servant and toward the Sender.

This verse also ties the mission back to covenant history. The God who appeared to Moses is the same God of the patriarchs. He has not forgotten His promises. That covenant continuity is later emphasized in Galatians 3:17, where God’s promise is shown to remain in force across generations.
