Exodus 4:4 | Pastor Burns' Study Notes

And the LORD said unto Moses, Put forth thine hand, and take it by the tail. And he put forth his hand, and caught it, and it became a rod in his hand: — Exodus 4:4

God tells Moses to take the serpent by the tail. Humanly speaking, this is the least logical and safest way to handle a snake. Yet Moses obeys, and the serpent becomes a rod again in his hand.

The lesson is clear: faith obeys the word of God even when obedience seems unreasonable by human standards. Moses had to trust God’s command more than his own instincts.

The sign teaches that what appears dangerous is subject to God’s authority. It also teaches Moses personally that God has power over what he fears. This is consistent with the larger principle of walking by faith and not by sight, as stated in 2 Corinthians 5:7 and Hebrews 11:1.
