Exodus 4:3 | Pastor Burns' Study Notes

And he said, Cast it on the ground. And he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from before it. — Exodus 4:3

God commands Moses to cast the rod on the ground, and immediately it becomes a serpent. Moses flees from it.

The moment Moses obeys, the ordinary becomes supernatural. The rod is transformed into something dangerous and threatening. Since the serpent was a significant symbol in Egypt, often connected to royal authority and divine protection, this sign likely carried symbolic meaning far beyond the immediate miracle. God was showing Moses His authority over the very power structures Moses feared.

Moses’ instinctive reaction is fear. This suggests that the sign also exposes something in Moses himself. The rod becomes what he fears, and God is beginning to teach him that even what terrifies him is under divine control.
