Exodus 4:2 | Pastor Burns' Study Notes

And the LORD said unto him, What is that in thine hand? And he said, A rod. — Exodus 4:2

God answers Moses by directing his attention to what is already in his hand. The rod was an ordinary shepherd’s staff, something Moses had used for forty years in Midian. It was common, familiar, and unimpressive.

The significance lies in the fact that God does not ask Moses to obtain something new. He begins with what Moses already has. This illustrates a recurring biblical principle: God often uses ordinary means to accomplish extraordinary purposes.

The rod had been a simple tool for guiding and protecting sheep. In God’s hand, it would become an instrument of power. The point is not the rod itself, but the God who uses it.
