Exodus 4:11 | Pastor Burns' Study Notes

And the LORD said unto him, Who hath made man's mouth? or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the LORD? — Exodus 4:11

God answers Moses with a series of questions: Who made man’s mouth? Who made the dumb, deaf, seeing, or blind? The answer is the Lord.

The emphasis here is divine sovereignty over human ability. Moses’ limitations do not surprise God. The Creator who made the mouth is not hindered by the weakness of the one He sends.

This verse does not teach cruelty in God, nor does it suggest pleasure in affliction. Rather, it affirms that human limitation lies within the Creator’s sovereign knowledge and rule. Brokenness entered the world through sin, but God remains Lord over the creature.

This must be balanced with Scripture’s teaching on compassion toward the afflicted, as seen in John 9:1-3 and Psalm 34:18. Affliction is not always direct punishment for sin, though in some contexts sickness can be connected to divine chastening, as seen in 1 Corinthians 11:27-30 and James 5:14-15.

The main point is that Moses’ weakness does not limit God.
