Exodus 3:4 | Pastor Burns' Study Notes

And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I. — Exodus 3:4

When the Lord sees that Moses turns aside, He calls to him out of the bush: “Moses, Moses.” The repetition of the name conveys urgency, intimacy, and divine initiative. God is not distant here; He addresses Moses personally.

Moses responds, “Here am I.” This is a significant biblical expression. It appears in the responses of Abraham in Genesis 22:11, Jacob in Genesis 46:2, Samuel in First Samuel 3:4, and Isaiah in Isaiah 6:8. The phrase expresses availability, readiness, and awareness that one stands before God. It does not mean Moses yet understands all that is coming, but it does show willingness to listen.
