Exodus 3:11 | Pastor Burns' Study Notes

And Moses said unto God, Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt? — Exodus 3:11

Moses’ first response is a question: “Who am I?” This is an honest expression of inadequacy. Moses knows his past failure. He once attempted to act as deliverer and failed. He is now fully aware of his weakness.

This question does not merely reflect humility; it also shows uncertainty about his own ability to fulfill such a calling. The sentiment echoes the amazement of Psalm 8:4: “What is man?” Moses knows someone must go, but he is not convinced that he is that man.
