Exodus 2:15 | Pastor Burns' Study Notes

Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to slay Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelt in the land of Midian: and he sat down by a well. — Exodus 2:15

Pharaoh was enraged when he learned of Moses’ actions and sought to kill him (Exodus 2:15). The one who had once been raised in the palace was now a fugitive. The prince became a refugee overnight.

Moses fled eastward. He left behind Egypt’s wealth, privilege, and power, escaping into the wilderness. He came to dwell among the nomadic Midianites. This was not random geography-it was connected to his own ancestry. The Midianites traced their lineage back to Midian, a son of Keturah, whom Abraham married after Sarah’s death (Genesis 25:1-2).

Genesis 25:1-6 tells us that Abraham sent the sons of Keturah “eastward, unto the east country.” Now, generations later, Abraham’s descendant Moses would find refuge among those distant relatives in that very region.

What looked like exile was actually positioning. God was moving Moses from palace training to pasture preparation. Before he could shepherd a nation, he would learn to shepherd sheep.
