For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. — Galatians 5:17
This verse explains the inward struggle of every believer. There is a conflict inside the Christian. The flesh pulls one direction, and the Spirit leads another. The old nature still desires sin, selfishness, pride, anger, lust, bitterness, and independence from God. But the Spirit of God leads us toward holiness, obedience, humility, love, and truth.
This is why the Christian life cannot be lived casually. There is a battle going on. Many believers become discouraged because they feel this conflict, but the conflict itself is evidence that the Spirit of God is at work. A lost man can be comfortable in sin, but a saved man cannot remain comfortable there because the Spirit of God is leading him another way.
