John 14:3 | Pastor Burns' Study Notes

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. — John 14:3

This verse gives the believer one of the sweetest promises in all the Bible: “I will come again.

Jesus does not only promise a place. He promises His presence. The greatest joy of Heaven is not merely streets of gold, gates of pearl, or reunion with loved ones. The greatest joy of Heaven is that Jesus will be there.

He says, “receive you unto myself.” That is deeply personal. The believer’s hope is not simply that we will go somewhere better, but that we will be gathered to Someone glorious.

The heart of Heaven is found in the phrase: “that where I am, there ye may be also.”

Heaven is Heaven because Christ is there.

This verse also gives comfort concerning the future. Jesus left with purpose, and He will return with promise. His going was not abandonment. His going was preparation. His coming again is assurance.

For the troubled heart, this truth steadies the soul: the Christian’s future is not uncertain. It is tied to the promise of Christ Himself.
