Exodus 7:16 | Pastor Burns' Study Notes

And thou shalt say unto him, The LORD God of the Hebrews hath sent me unto thee, saying, Let my people go, that they may serve me in the wilderness: and, behold, hitherto thou wouldest not hear. — Exodus 7:16

Moses repeats the command: “Let my people go.” The reason is clear-they do not belong to Pharaoh, they belong to God.

What stands out to me is the phrase, “hitherto thou wouldest not hear.” Pharaoh’s problem was not that he lacked truth-he had already heard. His problem was that he refused to respond.

Hebrews 5:11 speaks about being dull of hearing, and I see that here. It’s not a lack of truth-it’s a lack of obedience. James 1:19 tells me to be swift to hear, but Pharaoh hears and does nothing.

This reminds me that many people today are not lost because they lack knowledge, but because they refuse to respond to the truth they already know. The more truth someone resists, the easier it becomes to resist the next truth.

Ephesians 5 teaches that when God gives light, we are to walk in it. Light reveals. It calls for a response. If someone refuses that light, their heart becomes hardened. Pharaoh had light-but he refused it.
