From Tragedy to Trust

Series: Ruth

Book: Ruth

Scripture: Ruth 1:1-22

Life’s difficulties can test our faith, but the choices we make in those moments determine our direction. In Ruth 1, we see a family facing famine, loss, and uncertainty, and a critical decision that leads them away from God’s will. Instead of trusting in the Lord, Elimelech moves his family to Moab—a land of pagan worship—seeking worldly solutions to a spiritual problem. What follows is heartbreak, as Naomi loses her husband and sons, leaving her bitter and broken.

Yet, even in the midst of sorrow, God is working behind the scenes. Naomi hears that God has visited His people in Bethlehem, and she begins her journey home. But while one daughter-in-law, Orpah, chooses to turn back, Ruth makes a life-changing decision—choosing faith over fear. Her powerful declaration, “Thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God,” marks the beginning of a journey that will change everything.

This sermon will challenge us to ask: Where do we turn in times of trial? Do we trust God, or do we seek our own solutions? As we walk through Ruth 1, we’ll see the dangers of leaving God’s will, the cost of compromise, and the beauty of redemption for those who choose to follow Him. Join us for this powerful message and be reminded that even in the hardest seasons, God is still writing your story.
